Abhyanga

(Sanskrit: अभ्यंग or अभ्यङ्ग “Oil Massage”) is a form of Ayurvedic medicine that involves massage of the body with large amounts of warm oil and is classified as part of Snehana treatments. The oil is often pre-medicated with herbs for specific conditions. It is especially grounding and relaxing for Vata dosha imbalances, but everyone can benefit from this practice when the right choice of oil is applied. Sneha can be translated as both “oil” and “love.” It is believed that the effects of Abhyanga are similar to those received when one is saturated with love. Like the experience of being loved, Abhyanga can give a deep feeling of stability and warmth.
